I have a lot of ripped DVDs (.cdr files) on my Mac. I had ripped these DVDs with Disk Utility, using DVD/CD Master, so every DVD is now an 8 GB file. I can play these files on my Mac just fine with the built-in DVD Player app or with VLC.

Now I bought a new LG TV, so I thought I could just open these files on my Mac and airplay them to the TV. Apparently, it isn’t that simple because I get an error message. So I tried to Handbrake the .cdr files into normal mp4 files, but that didn’t work either. Same error.

I also tried to use Screen Mirroring to my TV, and while that does work, there is too much stutter to make it a viable option.

So I have been looking on the internet for ways to play these files on my TV, but the only answer so far seems to be to buy an Apple TV and use VLC on it. Or to get a good-old DVD player for the TV and play the original discs.

Is there a simpler way to solve this problem?

Try Plex. I used a media server that my TV can access too. Works great, and my DVD and Blu.-Rays are just "remuxed" to MKV, preserving full quality (but big file sizes)

I have many ripped DVD’s but did it through Handbrake and iFlick to mp4 files. They work great through my ATV or I Airplay directly to both my LG and Samsung tv without issue with my iPhone or iPad. All depends on what you want to do. ATV is relatively cheap but not needed. Also the Apple TV app works great as well for airplay. You would just need to convert your files as I have done when I rip them.
