How to auto-illuminate keyboard on new macbook pro under low light conditions

Hi,

On the last gen macbook pro--the silver one that came out like 6 months ago--the keyboard would automatically light up under low light conditions, but when there was enough light, it would be 100% off.

In the new one, how do you enable this? I tried going to system preferences, and enabling this feature under keyboard, but now, even in well lit areas, the keyboard is lit to a small degree...how do I make it so that the intensity of the keys lighting is dependent on the area i am in's lighting?

Because the lighting condition is so bright, it drowns out the LEDs light. But in lower light, they appear brighter due to the ambient lighting conditions.
