I want to make sure I don't lose my time machine backups on an external drive. Can I use a PC to copy TM folders to another external drive, or is there special formatting that it woudn't work (beyond HFS/NTFS). What is the best way to do this? TM drive is close to 1 TB.

My current mid-2007 iMac has got a failing hard drive and I'm getting a gifted 2009 iMac as a replacement. I had restored the time machine backup once to the older iMac but the hard drive keeps crashing. It's currently not working reliably so I'm not even bothering to turn it on anymore, much less use it to try this backup.

While I do have online backup (crashplan, some iCloud), my entire iPhoto album of 13 years is on those time machine backups, so I want to make sure as I restore to the newer iMac that I have a fail safe in case something happens in the process.

TIA
