I would actually use these features, but knowing that I would get my MacBook back with a wiped hard drive If I ever have to send it in for repairs, makes me think it would just be a big hassle. Unless there was a way to back up all the info to a thumb drive or CD for later reinstall.

Is this possible, and for free?

All of the data for the applications are store under: user->library

Just copying the mail folder, iCal folder, etc... But, having a back-up of your entire computer is generally a good idea.
 
I believe this is only possible with MobileMe.
Just thought: Give Time Machine a go if you have an external HD - but I don't think Time Machine works.
Edit: Looks like I'm wrong (above post)
 
You can use Time Machine to browse through old Mail Messages and old Address Book contacts however I'm not sure about iCal. I KNOW you can with Mail and Address book, It works just as well as it does in the finder.
