How to back up sms messages?

I upgraded from a 3G to a 4S. I am wondering if there's a way to back up the sms on the 3G? I want to do this so I can jailbreak and unlock the 3G so I can either use it as an emergency phone or bring it with me when I travel.

3G is at 4.2.1

Also I don't want it to sync with Itunes since I am already syncing my 4S with it.

Yeah. Get PhoneView. It's an app for your Mac, not your phone. It extracts the messages from your phone and puts them in a pdf in a "bubble" conversation format with time/date stamp for each message. However, it doesn't but them back onto the phone.

If you make a backup with iTunes - you don't have to sync it. Just back it up., the image it creates saves your old text messages.
