I have an original iPhone that got really slow after the upgrade to 2.0 firmware. If it doesn't get better in a few days, I might totally reinstall it. I would reinstall 2.0, because it has mouthwatering features and other people don't seem to have this problem.

How should I do the reinstall? How completely should I erase the iPhone? Should I restore factory defaults of all settings? Should I wipe it so hard that it forgets my email address? How can I back it up beforehand so that it doesn't lose my usage statistics and my SMS text messages and stuff?

Are there different levels of severity in an iPhone reinstall, which level should I choose, and how exactly do I accomplish it? Thank you.
