With the current 5.1 untethered jailbreak looming close (according to pod2G) i was wondering that how you can backup your contacts / save them while your jailbreak you iphone 4 and then easily place them back on to your iphone without having to restore or and thus losing the jailbreak?

Update, then backup via iTunes 1st, the JB. Restore from your backup during the process via iTunes when prompted.

Good luck!

iCloud

I find the easiest method is to sign up for a free iCloud account and backup your contacts with that.

The iTunes method is also good, but I've had a few issues with syncing a restored iPhone with my computer, and instead of copying my computer contacts to my iPhone, it decided to copy my blank iPhone contacts to my computer and wipe all of my computer ones.

Hello, friend. You can choose to restore SMS form your iTunes Backup if you once backed up your iPhone data with your iTunes library. If yes, you can use a third party software to restore SMS from iTunes backup onto your new iPhone smoothly even without your old iPhone.

Two posts to the same effect in threads more than a year old, mmmmm....
