how to backup your entire hard drive, to an external hard drive?

how? i know i can use time machine to seamlessly backup my macbook pro's hard drive, but i want to be able to remove my external hard drive--hook it up to another computer, and view the files normally.

also, im trying to do this over a wireless network. i want to back up my files on my MBP to my external hard drive connected via usb to my airport extreme.
