Hi, I know that for MBP built the past few years, one could apply a secured vault and also zero in the SSD before selling the MBP. I did that in 2015. How about the much older MBP 2010 17" running El Capitan 10.11.3? What is the best way to secure erase the data and return it to factory settings before selling? I can imagine that if it takes a day to zero in a 1TB SSD, it may takes days to do that to a 500GB old Hard Drive?

I might be wrong but mine might came with a recovery CD rather than a hidden partition with recovery partition.
