How to boot off the SL DVD?

Ok, I was trying to install SL on the mbp looked like it was going well, restarted and never made it back in. Just sits at the gray apple screen and spins. So now i'm looking at how to either boot off the DVD so i can try to reinstall it or at least get the disc to eject so I can put in a leopard disc. I tried hitting the eject button, but obviously that didn't work.

So any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hold down option while booting...

If I hold either C or option, nothing happens. By nothing I mean, the apple logo never comes up it just stays on the gray screen. I held each button for 3 mins before restarting and trying the other button.

EDIT: apparently 5 mins after i let go of the button it finally takes me to an install screen! lets try this again. hopefully will be back with good news!

It does take a while longer to boot from disc.
