I'm trying to browse my Intranet (with Firefox and Safari) using the NetBIOS server name, for example, server-x... but when I type http://server-x into Firefox i get an error (Firefox can't find the server at server-x).

If I type the server IP address I can browse it well... and if I use the smbutil lookup server-x command I get the correct IP over Terminal.

Is there a way to browse that correctly in MacOS?

TIA,

M

smb://mywindowsbox
assuming it is windows.
that's how i connect at work with my macbook and the windows file server.

Thanks, but it is NOT a file server... it's a web server with PHP pages. The smb protocol is working fine with other computers.

  1. Run a WINS server
  2. or Run a DNS forwarder
  3. or edit your LMHOST file (for windows)
  4. or edit your HOST file (in windows and mac)

Thanks phil29, but could you, please, be more specific... I'm runing Mac OS X 10.5.6 (Leopard) and don't have any idea on how can I edit the HOST file... the WINS server is already running and I can access it from all the Windows machines in the network.
