The dock is a staple of all Macintosh Computers running 10.5 and higher. We all use it, but some don’t like the design or 3D glossy feel of the dock. Luckily, you can change it if you put a little bit of effort in.

I have only tested this on 10.5!

******* Please, make a backup of the original dock before you modify it. I am not responsible for you losing your original dock*******

Step 1: Make a backup of the original dock

The original dock files are located at /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources. If you do not know how to access /Dock.app/Contents/Resources, from CoreServices, control-click the Dock.app icon and select Show Package Contents. Make a folder called “Original Dock” on your user account.

From Resources, look for a file called frontline.png. Move that to the Original Dock folder. You also need to move scurve-l.png, scurve-m.png, scurve-sm.png, scurve-xl.png, and separator.png from Dock.app Resources to your Original Dock folder.

Then, go back to the Resources folder and move frontline.png, scurve-l.png, scurve-m.png, scurve-sm.png, scurve-xl.png and separator.png to the Trash. Don’t worry, they are saved in your “Original Dock” folder even if you empty the trash.

*****Forgot to make a backup or lost it? Original Dock files are here*******

Step 2: Downloading and Installing the new dock

After you have the original dock files saved in “Original Dock” and those same files from Dock.app resources in the trash, head on over to download your dock of choice at Leopard Docks and put the downloaded folder somewhere on “your username” in Finder. Now, open up /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources in a new Finder window, keeping the Finder window with your dock folder open.

Now, open up your freshly download dock folder and look at the contents. If it has any of the following you are good to go. They are: frontline.png, scurve-l.png, scurve-m.png, scurve-sm.png, scurve-xl.png and separator, png. Select all of those files you have, and push command-C to copy them. Go over to /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources, and push control-V to paste them. Exit out of the Resources window.

Step 3: Applying the changes.

To apply your changes open Terminal, found in /Applcations/Utilites. Type this command: killall Dock.

Press enter, and your new dock should come up. Once it does, you can empty your Trash

Step 4: Reverting or changing docks

If you want to change to another dock, or revert to the original, just download the new dock, open /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources, find all of the nessecary files you need to delete, and throw them in the trash. Follow Steps 2-3.

Quick video I made, just showing how to do it.
