How to Change Siri and Audio Volume on HomePod

The HomePod and the HomePod mini are designed to automatically adjust the volume of the Siri assistant based on the level of noise in the room, but you can also verbally adjust Siri's volume level separately from the volume level of the media that's playing.

This how to walks you through the commands that you need to specifically adjust Siri's volume as needed.

How to Change Siri's Volume on HomePod

On HomePod or HomePod mini, you can ask Siri to set the Siri volume to a specific percent, which is an adjustment that is separate from the media volume.

To do so, just say "Hey Siri, change your volume to [percent]." You can also say "Hey Siri, speak at [percent]."

If you tell Siri to set the Siri volume to 34 percent, for example, it will adjust it to that level while the music volume stays the same. Siri can be forced to be quieter or louder than your music.

Change the Media Volume on HomePod

You can also verbally adjust the media volume with a similar command, and this will adjust just the song volume without changing the Siri sound level.

To change the media volume, just say "Hey Siri, change the media volume to [percent]."

Music levels can also be adjusted using the - and + buttons on the top of the HomePod or through a connected iPhone or iPad, but adjusting Siri volume specifically seems to require the spoken command.

I have some lights setup on HomeKit and have been reluctant to turn them on and off with Siri due to the loud response volume. A loud electronic voice is not always welcome.

Too bad Siri's volume won't stay set. Set the volume to a percentage and then ask a question. It jumps back up. You can verify by asking Siri what her speaking volume is.

Also, when did it become impossible to set or check the volume of other HomePods around the house? The only response I get now from Siri is "I can't check volume information on multiple speakers".

This. It’s infuriating that there isn’t a maximum or persistent volume slider for Siri in each HomePod’s settings. Also, that it doesn’t allow you to set a nighttime speaking volume there.

Hmm, that's frustrating. Mine seems to be staying put, on the standard HomePod running current 14.4 software. I wonder if there's some kind of bug.

Ok. But how do you set, or which one of those controls the intercom volume. When I intercom to all our homepods how do I set the volume that the intercom plays at?

Sometime I wonder if I make it too loud if Siri can hear me or not when I want to have less volume but so far it always hears.

No this doesn't work.

You can ask Siri to set voice volume to 10% and then immediately ask her what time it is and she will revert to an automatic volume setting. Every time. Siri will not retain volume settings.

There is a huge thread on /r/Homepod Reddit in regards to this, and in my case it's almost a dealbreaker with the HomePod.

With the umpteen directional microphones, real time room analysis, machine learning and all the rest of it I cannot understand why Siri doesn’t dynamically adjust its volume -an ‘auto brightness’ feature.

If I’m in the kitchen and shout ‘add x to my shopping list’ over a lot of background noise I need a loud response from Siri. Conversely I only need a whispered response if I’m reading a book at 10pm in the chair next to the HomePod.

I live in an 70 year old apartment and, though I'm on a top-floor corner unit with a stairwell on one side (and therefore only share one wall and a floor with my neighbours) I'm 1000% reluctant to speak to Siri beyond 10pm because she always seems to scream back at me. Persistent volume would be welcomed.

I’m on both standard and mini HomePods, all on 14.4. I can only assume it’s a bug, but then the feature isn’t listed in the release notes, so maybe the feature is actually a bug.......

Subsquent interactions were quieter.

2 hours later

For me the Siri volume also jumps back up unfortunately. This is especially annoying because since the latest HomePod update the Siri volume is way louder than it was before.

I have a Homepod Mini on my nightstand. Would keep the volume at a low setting so that Siri wasn’t yelling at/during bedtime. Then would turn it back up, if I wanted to listen to music at another time.
Then, I discovered an automation that can set the volume level at a specific time of day. Now, it automatically turns down at night, and back up in the morning.

Mine resets its volume every night. Super annoying. Have to force it to talk at 100% every morning. Why can’t it be automated?
