How to check what is wrong with hard drive?

my hard drive stopped working and I want to know if there is any program to see what is wrong with it? Because it stopped working just on running process, I did not drop it or smth. And if i connect on another PC hard drive apears but I can not explore, it is alowed only to format.
Any advices?

Boot from your system restore DVD and use disk utility to check the drive.
