how to "clean" a disk

On my Windows machines, I can completely wipe a disk clean with Diskpart's "clean" command. Is there a parallel command for Macs?

Can be done with Ubuntu/other linux, using liveCD:

sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/<yourDrive> bs=512 count=100000
