Keep them out of reach from your family members. Multiple people using the same EarPods is grotesque.

I'm feeling nauseous just thinking about that. Tack dough is surprisingly good at cleaning sensitive electronics. I don't use ear buds myself, but for anything wax or oily, nothing will beat isopropyl alcohol at 90%. If you can get your hands on technical grade, 99%, it's even better.
