I let my buddy check out my new MBA and he closed it like this. (Go to the 15 second mark)

Will that mess up the hinge? Is it safe to close my MBA like this? (it actually looks/feels pretty cool)

It's a hinge. Unless you try to close it so that the keyboard and screen end up on the outside instead of the inside, then it's merely doing its job. Relax.

What other way is there to close a hinge other than to put pressure on the top and bottom of the computer?

Normally I sit it on my desk and press down from the top gently.

But when I saw this "squeeze" method I didn't know if it was safe to do?

It depends on how hard you do it. The hinge doesn't know or care where you put your hands. I just imagine doing it this way you run more of a risk of slamming it too hard.
