I am having problems getting my mac's hard drive to format to an original state so I can re-install a fresh copy of mojave
Currently it is showing as 2 drives, both with 500gb capacity (even though I only have 1 physical drive that's 500gb)
I think it is this that is stopping my spotlight from showing me any apps and indexing.

I installed mojave onto one of the 'drives' that shows and wasn't allowed to install to the other one.
Only one drive shows in finder but in disk edit it shows 2.
I have booted into recovery mode but just cannot work out how to delete everything and end up with just 1 empty formatted disc ready to install an OS.
can anyone advise me of the steps I need to take to achieve this?
thanks in advance

You need to be in Internet recovery (command-option-r) boot and not regular recovery to do this.

Then set DU to Show all devices and select the drive itself at the very top like in my screenshot. Then erase the drive to macOS Extended Journaled. That should get the drive back to one formatted volume for you.

Thanks very much. I will try this tonight.
