Hi,

I need to compress a file so that I can post it on the internet. The max file size is 250kb and the zip I have is 600kb. Can you recommend a free tool that will allow me to compress it even smaller ?

Please post links as I've typed in several suggestions from older threads but they never seem to get anywhere.

Thank You

What's in it?

Usually, you can't make it any smaller. There are limits to the amount of compression. Try breaking it into two or three files if you can.

Zip is pretty efficient. If your zip file is 600kB it's unlikely you'll get it much smaller, definitely not down to 250kB. Compression must allow the byte-for-byte reconstruction of the original, so once you've removed all the redundant bytes you're left with just what's required.

You'll have to find some other way to send the file. Maybe split the file up (check the unix split and cat commands). Or upload to a file hosting service. Or if it's an image, reduce the resolution.

It's a .pln file, CAD file. the original size is 1.3mb and so far I have just right-clicked and chose ' compress '

You are already at half the size, you won't get much smaller with anything but plain text.
