I currently have a PS3 controller but wouldn't mind buying a PS4 if it makes things easier.
-------------
I've found several guides like this one (click here) that details how to connect a PS3 controller to a Mac so I can then use it for gaming.
But I can never get the Mac paired with the controller.
stuff I've tried:
1. tried on MacPro6,1 running Mojave
2. tried on MBP15 2010 running ElCap
3. tried on MBP15 2017 running Mojave
4. made sure the controller works by testing on a PS3
5. turned off the PS3 to make sure the controller doesn't paired with it.
6. There are guides which suggested I need to reset the controller (pressing a pinhole button on the underside). I've done this multiple times.
7. In System Information => USB, the PS3 controller shows up as PLAYSTATION(R)3 Controller.
8. I've found a guide (can't find the link now) that says wired connection should work but I've tried playing Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor and a game from ConEmu and my controller does nothing.
