How to convert a .flv video file...?

I want to download a youtube video and in my download menu a file appears but i cant open it...it appears as (video-1.flv)... i try QuickTime and i also try to extract the file...so my question is...how can i convert this file into a mp4 or into a format that i can use in imovie and idvd??
