Hi,

I had a MAC Book Pro and i had a movie file of 1GB in .AVI format
How can i convert that file to .MP4 format so that i can use that on my iphone

Handbrake is very good for video conversion. It has a lot of options, so it may seem overwhelming, but if you just stick to the presets, you'll be fine. They have a preset for iPhone/iPod touch.
 
Second the vote for Handbrake, it will do exactly what you want ... it even has a preset for iPhone.
 
For what its worth -- I had several small .avi clips taken with our standard digital cameras on vacation. I opened iMovie, dragged the few files to the workspace, drew a box around them and told it I wanted them to go to iTunes, nemed the file, and that was all there was to it! Movies sync to my iPod just fine.
 
When ever I use Handbrake to convert it just crashes after a few minutes so I now use iSquint
 
try iSquint or ffmpegx. I use handbrake mostly to rip DVD images, I'm not sure if it's the fastest way of generating mp4
