I tried using handbrake and others to decode and convert AVI and et cetera files, however i have failed again and again...could someone with a good heart show me the way...

thanks

Handbrake has rarely failed* me making/converting a file to ipod/iphone size.
IMHO it has to be user error :D

Have you tried iSquint?

What are the errors?
Are you setting Handbrake to the correct settings?

*the rare fails are some newer DVDs I've bought. Others have had issues with those same titles also as noted in the handbrake forums. I wish Disney and other studio's would put a mobile version of the movie on the DVD.

When you convert the movies in Handbrake are you setting the preset format to be Iphone??? Like Flhusky I have used Handbrake for a long time and have never had a failure to which it wasn't operator error.

Handbrake can only encode the movie to suit your iPhone if you have firstly decrypted the copy protection from the source dvd.

I had the same issues myself when I started using it and had to get some dvd decryption software and it's worked fine since.

Handbrake Clarification

New here so please go easy.

Regarding Handbrake. I have seen that it gets a lot of recomendations.

When you rip a DVD with Handbrake and you save it to your iTunes file, does the complete DVD come over? Specifically do you get the navigation page from the DVD or does it just launch the movie?

Thanks for the help.

I really wish people would:

But I suppose that, as this is teh interwebs, it's never going to happen...

Handbrake is only useful for converting DVD files.

If you want to convert "normal" video files, such as AVI or DivX you should use the "Export" command in QuickTime Pro. There is a preset in there specifically for the iPhone.

If QuickTime can't read the video file in question, then it's time to hunt down a suitable codec. I believe "Perian" is useful in this respect.

Finally, MPEGStreamclip has a rather useful batch conversion feature.

I really wish people would:
  1. check they have their facts straight

Since 0.9.3 Handbrake has: (quoting handbrake.fr)
Universal input

HandBrake is no longer limited to DVDs: it will now accept practically any type of video as a source. This massive enhancement was achieved by tapping into the power of libavcodec and libavformat from the FFmpeg project.

I wouldn't use handbrake to convert AVI files. Use something like DVD shrink (also great for ripping a DVD movie disc) first to a mpg file then use handbrake to convert to a proper iPhone mp4.

Crikey! You learn something new everyday and I've been using 0.9.3 since November.

That being said, I've never had much luck with ffmpeg or ffmpegx so I'll keep using QuickTime or StreamClip for my non-DVD needs.
