I'm assuming you mean cells with formulas, as I just tried it and the numerical contents of cells can be copied and pasted fine from Excel to Numbers but not formulas. BUT...

If you save your Excel sheet (in at least .xls format which is what I tried) it can be opened fine in Numbers using the standard "File-->Open" selection and will then be converted to a Numbers document with all the original formulas in place. You can then copy/paste needed cells to the spreadsheet you are working on right from within Numbers.

Actually I was talking about numbers in cells, even this i m not able to do it. I use iWork 08 maybe should I upgrade to 09...

Don't you just highlight them and then hit cmd+c to copy and then highlight the empty cells and hot cmd+v to paste?

Edit: I think it's the cmd key ... It's the one with the apple on it.

Well not trying to contradict that, but when I said that numerical contents of cells copied fine I was using iWork 08 also. I just highlighted the cells to copy in Excel, used Command+C to copy them then clicked a single cell in iWork to act as a target and pressed Command+V to paste the cells in.

I really can't imagine what is keeping yours from working. This is such a basic cut and paste operation it just doesn't make sense in the least. :(

Yep that's correct- select them and either use the keyboard stokes you mentioned or the menu version of Copy and Paste in the Edit menu. And yes, that is the Command key that has an Apple on it.

OK thanks for your feedbacks guys. I keep testing and I have now noticed that this is working from NeoOffice but not from MS Office.

So this is due to MS Office not iWork... I will investigate and keep you informed !

Was there any solution to this?

When I was using Excel from Office 04 I could copy from Excel and paste in Numbers 08 with no problems. I just upgraded to Office 08 and now it won't let me paste.

Numbers has been causing me no end of problems lately, what are the improvements in iWork 09?

iWork '09 can't fix a problem that doesn't exist. Cells copied from Excel 2008 can be pasted into Numbers '08 without issue.

Just do what the other person suggested and open the Excel file in Numbers.
