I have a newer iMac that I'd like to use the Mad Catz mouse with (and possibly other gaming mice that don't offer Mac software). I want the ability to customize the button mapping so, for example, I have the forward/back thumb buttons switch between desktop spaces.

From my own research, the only two programs I found mentioned that might be able to do this are USB Overdrive and SteerMouse. I'm not comfortable with either option because they're not sold directly through the app store.

I also know that going into Mission Control in the Mac's settings, there's the option to map some shortcuts to the mouse (like Mission Control, Application Windows, etc.). Unfortunately, this doesn't solve my problem because the main thing I want is to be able to switch spaces via the mouse.

Is there any simple way to customize the buttons on a mouse the way I want? Thank you for your time.

I'd suggest either "SteerMouse" or "USB Overdrive".
Both are excellent.
In fact, TRY BOTH, then choose the one you like the most.
