How to delete an iphoto my desktop?

New to iphoto & my G4 - when attaching an iphoto to an email, the photo also ended up on my desktop. I can't seem to delete the photo. Please advise in newbie terms. Thank you kindly!

That shouldn't happen.
have you tried dragging the photo into the trash can?

I can't get to the mac tonight, will in the AM and try your suggestion. TY
