How to delete messages from mac mail client but not from server?

I want to delete mail from my mac mail client, but I want it to stay on the mail server.

Is it POP or IMAP mail?

If POP, preferences>accounts>advanced, untick 'remove copy from server'
If IMAP, you can set it up not to delete straight away, look under 'mailbox behaviours'>Trash

You running POP3 or IMAP? That could be the problem/solution.
