No. Well unless you are talking to someone on AT&T and the call drops.

With number portability you can sign up for a number under AT&T (or any provider) and move it later on to Verizon (or any other provider)

Not since number portability where people have had the ability to take their numbers to whatever carrier they want. I'm sure my number comes up as Sprint even though I switched to AT&T a while ago.

You can find out which carrier a phone number ORIGINATED from. Using this tool:

http://www.telcodata.us/telcodata/telco

entering the area code and first three digits will get you that info.

Be aware though, that if a person has ported their number out to a different carrier, then the information will not be accurate.

When I was in college (9 years ago) or if you're in a small town, maybe, but since number porting it's difficult at best.

Even though it's not current that's still pretty cool.

My number came from the old AT&T back when there was both Cingular and a 'little' AT&T. Then Cingular bought my 'little' AT&T company and changed their own name to become the 'big' AT&T company we all know today. I went to T-mobile at that point and then came back to the new 'big' AT&T when I got my iPhone.

So I really didn't know what the page would report. It says I came from NEW CINGULAR WIRELESS (AT&T Wireless). Not entirely accurate since it wasn't Cingular at the time, but I guess the name got updated when they merged.

Still, interesting though.
