How To Dim Macbook Pro

For reading in pitch darkness the led backlit screen is still too bright even on the lowest setting. How do you enable the dim setting in energy saver/preferences to stay dim all the time? That's what I miss about LCDs they could operate whilst staying very dim.

Have you deselected the following and turned down the brightness with the F1 and F2 keys?
