Every time I boot up my MacBook it makes its trademark startup sound.

The problem is that it does this even when the volume is muted and headphones are plugged in!
I can't turn on my Mac late at night without waking up my girlfriend.
What is the recommended way turn this off or at least lower the volume significantly? I found this link in an older thread:

I just wanted to make sure that this is indeed the only way before I go messing with a third-party app that changes my startup settings and may or may not be Leopard-compatible.

Thanks.

Choices

If I had a woman who became upset with the Mac BONG, I'd seriously think about finding a new woman. A man must have his priorities in line. Do you want some occasional nookie, or a Mac?

Of course, you could switch to a PC. Then you could use a computer and get screwed at the same time :)
