How to disable screen with apps running?

Is there a way to leave applications open and running with the phone locked? I need to lock the screen while streaming video, with a tv output. I am pretty sure I saw an app for this in cydia a while back, but I can't seem to find it now.

Ummm.. how would I see it on the TV if it's running in the background?

What I need is a way to put the iPhone's display to sleep with orb still displaying on the tv.

basically, it needs to turn the screen off, nothing more.

Every time I plug in my composite Apple cables for TV out, my screen either goes to sleep or goes off anyway.

Why do you need the screen off? Producing too much light in the room? Why not just flip the phone over on its face?
