I only want to use spell checker in certain programs like Safari, Pages, Ms Word. But in mac os x it is always on, how can i disable it or customise it ?

I know that, I've been using OSX since 10.0. I don't get why. It doesn't make sense, it doesn't really interfere with anything, so why mess with it?

I am writing in Turkish which mac os does not understand, so it is always showing me red underlines. I do not want to see red underlined words.

Why don't you switch the system language over to Turkish?

I do not want it, I am living in the UK. When i write in english, spell checker is very useful but on the other hand it is not good when you are writing in different language. It is unable to recognise language differences.

I don't know, i've looked around and there doesn't apear to be any easy way to do it. Sounds like an OCD thing to me. Red lines never bother me, i do technical writing and i just ignore ones that aren't valid.

There may me some sort of 'hidden settings' tool you could use to do it also, but the one i have doesn't do it.

First page of Google search i found this for disabling it, http://dryfish.livejournal.com/8148.html

And this guy did some other stuff to. http://fuerstnet.de/en/disable-spell-checking-mac-os-x

But if i do that it will be completely disabled which is not necessary, cuz i need spell checker sometimes.. As it seems i cannot restrict it to a software...

So make some sort of automator script or system script, a little app that will shut it on/off when you toggle it. It's a system wide tool. It gets rather complicated if you only want to have it on in certain applications.

Aside from building your own scripts to handle it, i would suggest some OCD counseling to help you cope with the red lines. :)
