Hi, I am new to MAC os. It's pretty awesome, except the character limitation on the desktop annoys me and I am scared I'll delete a file by mistake one of these days.

Anyways to increase the number of characters on the desktop?

i meant ....

Hi, See the screenshot I took: http://coderate.com/desk.png

The second icon should be worksheet20001.xlsx
BUT it only shows Work...1.xlsk

I would like to see the full filename.

anyway that's possible?

Thanks, V

I don't know of a way to make the complete file name actually appear on Desktop files, but if you hold down the Option key and mouse over the file name it will show the full file name in a little popup. HTH

I don't have to hold down the Option key (OS 10.5.8) to get the yellow box. In fact, that seems to disable the action.

Another way to see the full name is to click twice (in Icon View at least). Make sure you pause between clicks.

The other way to reveal the entire name is to increase the grid spacing (Icon View again) in Show View Options.
