I bought a new macbook pro
will taking the hard drive from my older unibody macbook pro work if I install it into the new one?

or is a fresh install best?
is it possible to do a fresh install first, then restore files from timemachine without timemachine restoring the OSX files too?

If your old MBP has thunderbolt, I would use migration utility with a thunderbolt cable (you could buy it and immediately return it if you wanted)

well, I just removed the hard drive from the old mac and plopped it into the new one, reset the PRAM and eveyrthing is working fine.

I was concerned because I was using the original unibody macbook pro from 2008 which is a core2duo and the new ones are all i7.

I don't remember seeing those options last time I used time machine but it has been awhile.
maybe I will still do a clean install over the holidays.
thanx for the reply.
