Does anyone know how to remove devices from this list that you no longer use? For example, I wanted to start from scratch on my new MacBook Air, so I reformatted the laptop. Now, on my iPhone 6+, I see Macbook Air and MacBook Air (1). If I format again, I see MacBook Air (2), even though it's still the same Macbook.

Any way to delete or edit this list in any way? Or am I stuck with (1), (2), etc forever?

Log off that device from icloud. If that doesn't work, log your phone out, then back in.

Thanks for the quick response. So far, I've tried logging out, back in, and even completely formatting the iPhone. It's not really a big deal to me as the feature works fine, I just wish there were a way to edit this list down to just the devices I use.

And you are sure its the same device? You could always change your iCloud password and make them all log off.
