How to erase disk from disk utility

I haven't been able to erase two disks from my computer. I tried verifying disk permissions and repairing disk permissions but it won't let me erase the disk. The disks that I need to remove are Audacity and Switch. Can anyone help???

If you're talking about disk images, just drag them to the Trash

I'm running Mountain Lion, I tried just dragging them to the trash but it won't erase.

It does sound like those are DMG files from apps you installed? Open the Finder and do you see them listed like iBank 4 in my screenshot? Just click the little up arrow I pointed to and the will "eject" and go away.
