I have an early 2008 Macbook Pro, still running 10.5.8. (Leopard) I have the Lion update via USB but cannot boot the drive on anything older than 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

I have my backup external HD with everything I want to save, but planned on doing a clean reinstall for Lion, then upgrading to Mavericks.

How do I completely delete the old 10.5.8 so that I can install Lion directly onto the HD without having to go through installing the Snow Leopard DVD, then Lion, then Mavericks...

Or is there another simpler solution?
