I have several DV video clips which will be shown on a webpage against a black background.

I shot the talent (medium closeup, speaking to camera) against a black backdrop, which after adjusting colours, is still slightly grey from reflected lighting.

I'd like to fade the left and right edges of the video frame to full black, so that you can't see the border between the video frame and the webpage background.

(I'm not bothered about the top and bottom edges)

I can't see any way of doing this in iMovie or FCE. (I work mainly in iMovie and am trying to learn FCE)

I've googled, but maybe I'm using the wrong expressions, as all I can turn up is stuff about fading clips to black, which is something completely different.

Use a vignette, or crop and feather the edges? I've got FCP, not Express, so I don't know exactly which options you have available to you, but that's probably how I'd go about doing it.
