How to find and read old-old emails

I would like to find and read certain emails from 2001 that I sent and received in Apple Mail in a POP account. I do not remember what OS version I was using but it was probably the last version of OS 9 because I don't think I installed OS 10 for about a year after it was introduced, but I'm not sure. In any case, I believe I have those emails backed up on an external drive. How does one retrieve and read ancient emails?
