I have a Mountain Lion installer and don't know what version it is and would like to know if I need to download the latest version or not before I start trying to install/make a bootable installer from it.

I have heard there's a file inside that can tell me but I cannot find the answer!

First: Right click installer & show package contents. Navigate to and mount the InstallESD.dmg

Second: Navigate to the SystemVersion.plist and look for the ProductVersion string.

Hope this helps! :)
