there has been a lot of discussion about the failing home button in older iPhones..
when reading grubers review of the iphone 5, he mentions the issues with the button and links this site:
http://www.subtraction.com/2012/01/10/the-miracle-of-wd-40
which tell you how to fix it.

I did it myself and it seems to be working MUCH better...

hope it helps others..

(still cant wait to get a nice crispy home button on the new 5 though)

When I had a sticky home button, I took my iPhone 4 to the apple store...they took it in the back to clean it out. Been working much better ever since.

people with iphone 4s are WAYYYYY out of warranty

..there is no damage that can occur from a drop of wd-40 on your home button..or you could use alcohol or corrosionx

just put a drop on the button and used a rag and pressed it a few times...wiped it down and the phone looks brand new (and now works like brand new also)

...im sure you have your phone in a hermetically sealed case as well..

for someone who is about to sell their 4..this is the perfect method to make it running good as new again.

guess its not for everyonie..just offering a solution that helped me greatly
