How to fix my Baltic Blue Apple leather case (iPhone 12 Pro Max) to not feel like plastic?

I've always bought Apple's OEM leather cases, and generally been pretty satisfied. I have the Baltic Blue for my 12 Pro Max (work phone) and have used it daily for 6+ months and the "feel" of the leather is just driving me crazy. Feels like rubber. Not at all like the leather cases from my iPhone 11 Pro, or the new one I got for my 13 Pro.

Do I use sandpaper? Why does it feel like rubber?
