Like many people with a Western Digital My Book drive, I'm a bit annoyed by its "power-save" feature that puts it to sleep every 10 mins. It means that there can be a long wait when accessing a file dialog or similar, while the drive spins up.
It's the MAJOR bottleneck in my otherwise super-speedy setup.
I contacted WD, who advised me of the following. Go to the Download section for WD My Passport drives, and download the "WD Drive Utilities" app. It's basically the same app that will work for any of their drives, but currently it's not listed under the MyBook downloads.
You can then use this utility to alter the duration before sleep.
One other note: the utility (and also the WD Firmware updater utility) only recognise drives connected by USB, not FireWire. So you have to connect it by USB for the utilities to recognise the drive.
Their support is a clusterf...., so I thought I would post the solution.
