Hello. I have an iMac which I have programmed to shut down automatically every night at 11:00PM. Inevitably, someone leaves Safari open (despite my repeated grumblings ). Every morning I go to the computer to find it has not shut down, but instead presents me with a dialog box saying the computer could not shut down because Safari prevented it.

Is there a way, maybe a script, which will force all apps to close and allow the computer to shut down. I am not concerned if it causes data loss because a file was left open.

Thanks for any help.

If you're happy using cron, then creating a crontab with:

00 23 * * * pmset sleepnow

will cause a sleep at 11pm each night. I prefer sleeps to full shutdowns.
