How to force the desktop to refresh?

How do I force my desktop refresh? My external hard drive is not reporting the correct free space, since I am moving files from one hard drive to another right now. It'd be nice for it to actually show me the correct amount of free space while I'm moving files between hard drives.

Only way off hand I know is by Relaunching Finder (Can be done via Terminal [Killall Finder] or Force Quit.. via Finder menu).
