I just got my Apple TV 4K for Christmas (and it’s awesome)!

I have a Sony 930C (set HDMI to Enhanced) and everything works great.

I went into my Apple TV settings and under “Match Content” I turned on Range and Frame Rate.

The TV plays everything in its proper Range and switches between HDR/SDR (through the TV) perfectly.

The only “issue” I’ve noticed is it seems to be upconverting everything to 4K. HDR/SDR switches perfectly but the TV always seems to be in 4K mode.

Is there a way to get it to switch between 1080 and 4K depending on the content being played? If so, how do I enable that?

Thanks!

I think the box will upscale to the resolution set and does not match content for this. But even if the Apple TV didn’t upscale then the TV would.

you can't enable resolution match.

the aTV is doing the upscaling to 4K, which is pretty easy, since 1 pixel in 1080 is 4 pixels in 4k
so everyone's upscaler is pretty much the same.

Thanks! With my TiVo (and watching regular cable) my Sony TV can switch between 1080i and 720p.

That would be nice if Apple allowed it to switch between 4K and 1080p depending on the content.

The TV is just showing the the input resolution. The actual image you see is upscaled by the TV to 4k.

A 4k TV has ~8.2 million pixels. A 1080 image is ~2 million pixels. So if you display a 1080 image at its native resolution on a 4k screen 3/4 of the screen wouldn't be used and look like this...

So the TV upscales it to fit the entire screen.

The difference here is the AppleTV is upscaling that image and sending a 4k image to the TV which the TV natively displays.

Many sets are still better at processing lower resolutions images. Then once all the required post processing is applied its finally upscaled.

Notable example would be minimizing/eliminating judder from a lower/odd frame rate in a 60hz source. A lot of TV's do a fine job at it with a 1080p source but only more modern TV's can a adequate job when its 4k@60hz. Thankfully Apple implemented frame matching so that particular example shouldn't be an issue anymore.

On may particular set, I cannot see any difference in upscaling compared to the Apple TV across the range of formats so I let the Apple TV upscale. I leave the Apple TV get on with it and forget about it.
