So I would like to get 5.1 surround sound on my 2011 iMac. I would like to primarily use this for games. I have a griffin fire wave but it does not seem to work on games from what I can tell. Please if anyone could tell me what parts I need to make this work and a set up it would be greatly appreciated.

Normally, you would use the optical out for 5.1 on mac... but in your case, the firewave should work... Now keep in mind, not all content will truly be 5.1 on your computer (e.g. a stereo music file will not play in true surround sound, even if it is playing on all of your 5.1 speakers).

Well when I play WOW for instance I only get stereo even though in the game I have it set to 5.1. When someone is talking behind me I do not hear there voices until I spin around to seeing them.
Normally for music and movies I do not care. I am just trying to get it working for games. If I use optical to a receiver will that do 5.1 for games? Just movies?
