How to get back to a clean jailbreak?

Can someone tell me step by step what I need to do then to start from scratch with a clean jailbroken iphone 4? Obviously don't want to lose my mobile numbers etc.

Currently its on 4.0.1 and its jailbroken but crashe's quite often due to something I installed which kept making it crash and wouldn't uninstall until I SSH'ed into it and removed it manually but obviously the phone still thinks its installed.

I DO NOT WANT TO UPGRADE TO 4.2.1 AND HAVE TO USE A TETHERED JAILBREAK.

Have you got SHSH files saved?
You could jump to 4.1 if you do

was that the thing that cydia asked if u wanted to do the first time you jailbreak 4.0? if so then yeh i did do i think.

Go to the cydia main screen and look for SHSH.
If you don't see the ios version you want, then you don't have the SHSH for it.
