When I updated my MacBook Pro to Big Sur, it created a Desktop - Local and a Documents - Local in the Finder Sidebar. Files in these two places only appeared on the MacBook Pro and not in iCloud Desktop nor in iCloud Documents. The same is also true in the Finder Sidebar on my MacBook Air M1. I really like this feature a lot. Any files I want in iCloud Documents I place there they become available to all my Apple devices. Any files I want on my Mac machine desktops can likewise be placed in iCloud Desktop and be available to all desktops. If I want a file only available to a particular machine's desktop or documents I place the file in Desktop - Local or Documents - Local.

Here is my problem. When I updated my iMac to Big Sur no Desktop - Local or a Documents - Local was created in the Finder Sidebar. On the iMac, the Documents and Desktop in the Finder Sidebar are only iCloud. If I place a file in either place it becomes available in iCloud. I would like the iMac to have the same setup as the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air M1.

I've Googled and searched this forum and can't find a solution. In fact, everywhere I read, users, don't like what I like and are trying to get all their machines to behave like my iMac, which I don't want.

Can anyone help me?

I found the answer! Go to System Preferences > iCloud, iCloud Drive, and press Options. Uncheck Desktop and Documents Folders. Then Big Sur creates the Locals in the Finder Sidebar.
