How to get Data on iphone 2G

I am a new AT&T employee and have had an iPhone 2G I have been using as an iPod touch. My employee line is $20 a month, which includes talk, text, and unlimited data. I am supposed to pay more for a smart phone, but put my phone in other smart phones and the data works perfectly. I have jail broken and unlocked my iPhone, but the data does not work, like it does on other smart phones. What do I have to do to get it to work, and why isn't it working at the moment?

That is a damn cheap plan for AT&T. Wouldn't an iPhone 2G just get EDGE?
